Tutoring is an important part of any student’s education, whether they require help with homework, basic study tips, assistance with spelling and grammar or more focused work involving essay writing skills, preparation for exams, or simply a greater understanding of the content they are studying.

It is important to understand that students of all levels and backgrounds can benefit from tutoring regardless of what stage they are at in their studies. I see a great deal of students who are concerned that they are not smart enough, or are worried that needing a tutor means they are not up to par. Those students would be surprised to find out how many Australian students are not ‘up to par’, and who just require some more focused, attentive learning.

We all learn in different ways and at a different pace to each other, but often teachers can only cope with so much individual attention during class. Students get left behind, struggle to keep up, and end up feeling frustrated and incompetent. Tutoring is a great way to get on top of your studies, feel as if you are in control, and gain more confidence at school.

I teach students to be organised, to help them deal with stress, to teach themselves how to be autonomous in their studies and how to be more critical and analytical in their work. Tutoring should NOT involve a tutor telling a student what to do and basically dictating the work to them. Students should be encouraged to formulate their own answers, ideas and opinions. Highschool and higher learning is not just about great exam marks. It is about learning how to depend on yourself and become a clear and analytical researcher and writer.

I tutor students in their own homes or at their schools, whichever is preferred.

Levels

I tutor years 7 to 12 and also students at a tertiary level.

Subjects

I primarily tutor English. However, I am also capable of tutoring all subjects that require an understanding of English and skills in this field - that is essay writing, spelling and grammar, comprehending complex texts and so forth.
